So, I will share with you a fascinating article from the Smithsonian's exhibit "Because of Her Story."
For those of you who love Native flute music, the piece by Mary Youngblood (number 5 in the article) is supposed to be really good.
This morning I looked at the orchid at my window, and there she was. A bloom open. I have been waiting three years for this moment. It reminds me of Jackie, going back to work today after a year of novitiate in our community. Sure, this orchid had an extended novitiate of sorts (three years instead of the canonical one), but today she is most lovely and the cause of my joy and gratitude and contemplation this morning.
My latest column for the Global Sisters Report explores the way we pray and the graces that we pray for. Sometimes what we desire is different than what we need. The dialogue of prayer can bring these distinctions to light and invite us to see the glimmers of grace that God is offering if we are aware and courageous enough to embrace them. Enjoy!

The Ursuline Sisters held a prayer service and blessing on Nov. 1, 2021, for the portrait of Father Paul Joseph Volk which now hangs in Saint Joseph Villa.
Father Volk helped found the community in Maple Mount when he asked Ursuline Sisters of Louisville to send teachers to open Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1874. In 1981, Paul Volk Hall was built as housing and offices for some Sisters, and a portrait of Father Volk – painted from a photo taken of him late in his life – has hung in the building ever since. Paul Volk Hall is closed and the portrait now hangs in the Villa lobby.

Do you think November is a special month? I do. Let me tell you why. It opens with a day we call All Saints Day – a day we celebrate those who have gone before us who have led holy lives yet have not been canonized – our parents, grandparents, siblings, community members and good neighbors. The next day is All Souls Day – a day we celebrate those who have gone before yet may still need more purification before entering eternal glory.
