Today marks the one year anniversary of my profession of final vows as a Sister of Saint Joseph. Looking back on the year that has been, it's hard to believe all that has come to pass. I never would have thought that 6 months of my first year of perpetual profession would be lived out under the curious circumstances of COVID-19. As I reflect back on September 15, 2019, I am filled with gratitude for the grace of God and the gifts of community. Our Constitutions as Sisters of Saint Joseph say that "each day we make a new beginning," and surely that is true for me today and always.
The second annual Trivia Night hosted by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020, was a fun evening for all in attendance. Some of the Ursuline Sisters volunteered, and others played trivia. A few Ursuline Associates were also on hand. This year’s “Escape to the Mount” trivia was held at the Immaculate Parish Hall in Owensboro, Ky., to allow for greater social distancing. Face masks were also a sign of the times, along with temperature checks at the door.

Four years ago it was my honor and privilege to be a Nun on the Bus. You remember that election I am sure. I was on the bus from Janesville, Wisconsin to Cleveland, Ohio. Along the way I met some amazing people and heard incredible stories about the joys and struggles of our brothers and sisters. My leg on the trip ended at the Republican National Convention where we passed out lemonade to delegates and asked them three questions: 1. Who is difficult to talk to about politics in your family and why. 2. What conerns you about the election. 3. What gives you hope for our nation.
There are people, avid gardeners, who pluck seeds from each summer’s dead flowers to get a head start on next season’s planting.
The canonical novitiate year is a time for listening. Each novice listens intently to discover who God is calling her to become. This sacred year invites us to follow Jesus more closely by adopting the way of Saint Dominic de Guzman (1170-1221) and his early companions.

I would like to share an article about one of my ‘firecracker’ sisters. Just one of the amazing women I’m honored and privileged to call ‘my sister’ in our community.
In his letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul tells us that as we sow so shall we reap. We see a lot of reaping going on right now. Farmers and gardeners are reaping what they sowed earlier. At our meals we are enjoying fresh tomatoes, green beans and squash. Riding along the road, one can see soy beans and corn. Two examples on a literal level.

Christine was a very busy young woman. Not only did she feel lucky to have a full-time job, but due to her mother’s recent surgery she was helping to take care of three younger siblings. While they weren’t infants, they still needed supervision and, of course, dinner each evening.
