Geese heading north and…

… Patrice heading into the snowy woods….

…with Jeannine, a friend who is the principal of the K-8 tribal school (Enemy Swim Day School).

The temperatures on Sunday were in the 40s, so to celebrate, we enjoyed a couple of hours on the still-snowy paths at Waubay National Wildlife Refuge. Songbirds were all over, and flocks of snow geese and Canadian geese kept flying north far above us. It’s easy to understand why the Dakota people named this area “waubay.” The literal translation is “water where many birds gather.”

After a winter spent almost entirely indoors (and mostly at home, teaching from home), it was wonderful to get outside and feel the sun and wind! I think the birds felt the same.
