What name do you prefer? The question about what name one prefers is not new in religious life. My CSJP Sisters had shared stories on how they received, what some of them called, their "nun name" when they made the first vows decades ago. The owner of the name did not understand how the name was chosen. The stories on how the name surfaced and given to the individual was the norm then. This meant taking on the new name and dropping their given birth name. It meant taking on a new identity. Most of the sisters have now reclaimed their given birth name.

It took me a long time to answer my call, even though I knew what it was from an early age. Growing up post-Vatican II meant that most of my ideas about Sisters came from pop culture rather than actual Religious. As time wore on, I had built up such a notion of what a Sister was that I could not imagine being able to live up to it. And so I went about building up my life until the inevitable happened and I entered the Maryknoll Sisters.
As Giving Voice’s new Communications Coordinator, I am elated to partner with young women religious as they discern God’s path for them in community and in the world. I’ll tell you this: these young sisters have contagious energy to build a better church and world! I am blessed to be a part of the journey.
Interested congregations of women religious, Church groups, faith communities, and other concerned organizations are invited to join members of Giving Voice in prayerful solidarity with the SOAW Border Convergence in Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico the weekend of October 7-10th, 2016. Women religious in their 20s and 30s are invited and encouraged to join us for a retreat this January 13-15 at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery in Phoenix, AZ. The retreat will include time for individual and communal prayer, shared reflection and conversation, as well as break time to have fun and get to know one another. Giving Voice uses the principles of The Circle Way as a basic format and process for our gatherings.
Giving Voice’s National Gathering will take place July 6-9, 2017 at Iona College in New York.
