Green Saints for a Green Generation
A new release from Orbis Books includes contributions from many Giving Voice sisters.
- “Our Catholic tradition is so rich with saints who are sources of hope, that during these times of ecological uncertainty, we can turn to our already beloved saints as sources for inspiration and seek out new ecological saints to be our new witnesses. For me, this project is about giving sisters, scientists, and theologians a platform to speak about the people who inspire us to do better ecologically, as we are the “green generation,” those who have always been aware of the need to care for the Earth. My chapter considers how the humility of our foundress, St Marguerite Bourgeoys, can inspire us to do better for all inhabitants of our planet.”
Sr. Libby Osgood, CND – editor
- “I’ve had many religious sisters accompany me along my spiritual and ministerial journeys, but Sister Paula Gonzalez, SC has always been an energetic spark challenging me to see the intertwining cry of earth and cries of marginalized people.”
Sr. Rejane Cytacki, SCL
- “I was eager to share how the mystical insight and wisdom of St. John of the Cross could motivate all people of good will to see the natural world as revelatory of God and to therefore take seriously the need to care for the environment. For John, the visible beauty of creation reveals a hidden God – the risen Christ who pervades the entire cosmos. This project helped me to connect my passion for God and my love of Carmelite spirituality with a critical concern of our time.”
Sr. Celia Ashton, OCD
- “The climate crisis is an urgent need of our time that I feel called to respond to. I’m in awe at God’s surprising and creative invitations in my life. I was perplexed when I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to consider St. Ignatius as an ecological saint. I discovered an abundance of “green” inspiration and wisdom in the life and legacy of St. Ignatius of Loyola. I hope you too do!”
