From the Tekakwitha Conference

The Tekakwitha Conference is an international group of Indigenous Catholics. From its website:

The Tekakwitha Conference is the Voice, Presence and Identity of Indigenous Catholics of North America under the protection and inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.

The Tekakwitha Conference shared the following prayer on the Feast of St. Kateri Tekakwitha. It recognizes and honors the sometimes challenging and conflictual realities faced by so many Indigenous Catholics, especially in relation to traumatic boarding school experiences and experiences with the Catholic Church. It is a good reminder for us that the need for healing, reconciliation, and restorative justice is a priority for so many.

Our Feast Day Prayer

On this feast day of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks, we pray for the ongoing efforts toward reconciliation and restorative justice which aim to heal the brokenness that exists between the Catholic Church and our people. May we continue to recognize that while “we are the Church” so many of our brothers and sisters continue to live with the trauma that prevents them from a true encounter with Jesus Christ. Through the intercession of Saint Kateri, may all those who are hurting come to know that Jesus is not the oppressor, despite those who oppressed others in his name.

Amen.
